>>>I think it needs to be fully discussed and researched before taking any action<<<

Absolutely, 100 percent correct. The study/commission should have been formed 15 years ago! Nixon had a commission you know. It recommended legalizing marijuana. Nixon repudiated the recommendation, called for stiff sanctions by federalizing marijuana laws, in effect, beginning The Drug War as we know it today.

Regarding the 'gateway' argument, that smoking pot will lead to harder drugs and even harder ones after that? It's a bogus argument. All of this stuff comes down to how well educated one becomes regarding personal heath and responsibility and how one's cultural effects affect an individual. But our society is so dishonest on the drug issue, it's easy for young folk growing up to recognize U.S. drug policies as fraudulent, thereby creating less confidence about the 'system' among young folks. Meanwhile, mainstream society's hooked on tobacco and nicotine and everything's supposed to be all right. If you think Republicans are gonna do their part to eliminate hypocrisy, you're sadly mistaken.
