Lucius, Drew, others...

Kodak is selling off its older line of digital cameras now.

You can purchase the DC 280 for under $400.00 right now...

This is also a 2.1 megapixel camera.

Regarding fixed focus and fixed focal length, you are correct, Lucius. The HP Photo Smart 315 is "autofocus" with a fixed focal length, but not a fixed focus like a throwaway. This camera has no zoom and no macro features. I think these limitations allow for the pricing considerations. CCD size/resoultion combined with the quality of the lens and photo processing algorithms are the most important in determining final image resolution. HP has used a higher resoltion CCD in this camera, but has skimped on the lens. The lens itself is disappointingly small and the aperture appears to be fixed. The "big brothers" in the HP line are reportedly manufactured by Pentax. In the HP Photo Smart 315 image quality will likely lag behind when compared to other 2.1 megapixel offerings with more expensive optics.
