Nobody could rebut your pessimism better than Uncle Frank has so I won't even try. But I noticed one little point that might not be so little. You mention that in the work you are doing at a bank, the faster computer has no effect. I'm sure that's true; you certainly must know. But this is not some general phenomenon, that we are pumping out new technology that nobody needs. I can tell you that in my life a recent move to a faster computer, Pentium III 933MHz, Rambus memory, has made my programming tasks much faster to do. I'm in high gear at last. It's a pain to be unproductive while one is waiting for a compilation or for the results of a small test job. Users of our software who buy a faster computer are much happier. It's a dream come true for me. I can't wait to buy a Pentium IV computer, running at 1-2 GHz from Dell. In my corner of technology there are tremendous gains happening. Your experience isn't necessarily typical. P.S. I forgot to add that these new, much faster computers are a lot cheaper than the slower ones used to be. It's great for our budget. Some of the savings can be used for pay raises.:-)
