res- Navy re-enlistment was a Radio Headline News story I heard last week. It proved to me that Bush and Cheney are lying. We know what they are really trying to do, make Gore look un-patriotic and unmanly.

You are absolutely clueless about what is driving Navy re-enlinstments. About 6 months ago, in a desperate measure to prevent everyone from leaving the service, the Navy started offering HUGE bonuses for people to stay in. 20 year old kids are now given 60 grand to sign up for 2-4 more years depending on the rate.

These type of short term measures are directly related to what Cheney and Bush have been talking about. They wouldn't be necessary if we had leadership which was strategically managing the complex issues related to manpower and equipment needs. Additionally, the way in which people re-enlist is very complex, and the numbers can be manipulated to look completely different than they are.

For instance, if you originally enlisted for 6 years, you may be able to re-enlinst at your 3 year point as long as you guarantee an additional 2 years of service beyond the 6 year point. Many people do this in order to get the bunuses when they are as large as they currently are. And it's an easy way to paint a picture that everyone is re-enlisting, when in fact they are simply extending their tour for a couple of years for the bonus.

In other words, it's an emergency stop-gap measure put in place to address exactly what Bush/Cheney have been talking about.

The assumptions you made based on a radio report are exactly why so many people appear so ignorant. I call it "bubble gum news" because it gives you absolutely no depth or knowledge about the real issue involved.

Before you start calling someone a liar, you should first become informed.
