Would you mind sharing your European friend's perspective of 2.5 and 3G rollout in Europe? Does he see an 1X-EV overlay as a possibility? Are the prices of goverment auctions for new spectrum threatening the viability of the build-out?

His observations were general, pointing to a number of European job references to support the widespread use of VxWorks in 3G devices under development. In particular, he did not comment of overlay substitutes for 3G. Frankly, none of this was much of a surprise to me, since it has been well-known for some time that WIND has close working relations with most of these companies. For example, when WIND acquired ISI, it got a strategic relationship with Alcatel. The story goes that the day after the merger agreement was signed, Alcatel made a policy decision to switch immediately to VxWorks corporate-wide. (The point: once the mainstream is defined, all major climb aboard.)

The interesting thing he called attention to was the big bucks going into 3G spectrum auctions TODAY in Europe. Whether or not it affects the long-term viability of 3G, there can be no doubt operators owning expensive spectrum must have 3G infrastructure and client devices ASAP. Time is money. Lots of money equates to very little time.
