Actually, I looked it up because I did find "magnate schools" in my paper, using Alta Vista and I saw it written that way too, but more rarely. I'd always thought like you, that it was magnet, but since the meaning of magnate also means distinguished, I could see how that could work too.

Since I'm a touch typist and if the word isn't flagged, this seems a minor thing. We should look past it because I have seen it both ways, in authoritative places. I could see how the distinguished meaning could work. And I could see how the attraction meaning could work.
