In defense of Ericsson's handset division, the release of the R380 and the R520 have shown that Ericsson can occasionally do a great job of outengineering its competition. Of course, the R380's too expensive, and the two features that make the R520 stand out are useless for most people right now. However, looking one or two years out, assuming that Ericsson's still in this business at that point in time, the progression of Moore's Law, as well as other technological advances, could allow Ericsson to offer phones with features that are nonexistant in the offerings of its competitors, and yet at the same time are quite useful to consumers, all without bankrupting them either. In this case, Ericsson's, um, mediocre, product designers could be forgiven for their sins.

On another note, Siemens has recently been doing a pretty good job of demonstrating its engineering skills as well, all while offering features that a number of people might want. Still no word on how much the SL45 is going to cost, though.
