Yes, DJ, I see what you mean. I see this in popular science produced for mass consumption. If one looks at some to the parasites, and they go through 5 or 6 intermediate hosts from egg to adult. ANYONE who has half a brain cell should think, how in the heck did that bugger figure out how to do that? How many failures could you take in this causal chain? The obvious answer is not a single one.

I posit that there is probably a "guiding force" (hence my screen name). That would be The Cosmic Force as an invisible hand. It manifests as life or self-organization. In terms of physics it is the creation of order from disorder but with an INCREASE in the number of available states.

I look at this as something akin to an engine. These little engines are created and recombined to form new engines, but what starts building the engines. Blind randomness is a poor way to model this. I don't think it is random. IMO, there is a principle of optimization that is difficult to visualize and model but is probably necessary to explain some evolutionary branches.

It could be really just dumb luck. But there seems to be an awful lot of things that have to go this way or that to get to a mutation of a shrimp that takes us to a chicken, or a dog. And does it it in such a regular way. That is really hard to get your hands around and seems to be an awful lot to attribute to JUST dumb luck.
