Yes. They are "sell side" analysts & you've outlined their function well.

Was a broker with one of the largest W.S. firms from 1976-82. You'd be amazed that even inside the industry although many brokers are quite callous about their clients many more don't even understand the sell side game! Got to know quite a few of them well as coworkers during my 6 years and I know this to be the case.

But that notwithstanding, the fleecing of most investors including many mutual funds by the major W.S. firms enables them to create easy money for their large corporate clients, as well as their political AND investment media allies. Without that political and press cover, the sell side game would have been exposed and ended a long time ago. Even the reforms after the Great Crash of 1929 did not alter the essential nature of the sell side of the biz.

It's essentially a process of robbing the poor to give to the rich and it's been played for over a hundred years. Moreover would venture the guess that to a greater or lessor extent it's been characteristic of major investment markets throughout history. As least that's what my undergraduate studies in History have led me to conclude.

So I was just lucky to catch on on early in my W.S. tenure and plan an early exit. Must admit, however, that refining an awareness of how this plays out in specific situations continues to be an ongoing process, but has done a lot to help my investment returns over the years.

This is my 1st post on the thread. Have been reading Don Sew and some of the rest of you here or on other threads for a long time and really appreciate your work.

Best
