I actually agree with YOU that a lot of it isn't conscious- that's why I said we absorb both the verbal and the non-verbal. I think we just know what society deems is "good" even if we don't know we know it. Most of us of course know we know SOMETHING about "good" and "bad" as society defines it for us- but I would argue at an unconscious level we are so socially wired that most of us exhibit very little variance from appropriate responses- and those of us that are inappropriate, even in small ways- like interrupting too much, or invading personal body space, or maintaining poor eye contact, are disciplined severely by society. In fact I think many of us don't know EXACTLY what society is defining as good- since most of us haven't extensively studied non-verbal communication. I have been- and I can tell you that what society really deems "good" (and thus rewards), is a bit different from the "good" that we give lip service to.
