Despite our weak backs, TP, I'd suggest you or I would have a very hard time specifying and then building with our technology now something that performed as well on 1/10 Horsepower, had the flexibility, weight, resilience, self-repair, autonomy and strength as a human body.

Single function mechanisms or human made devices can rarely if ever approach the practical design tradeoff that are easily attained by nature, or so it would seem.

That is my engineering esthetics talking. But I think on a large number of factors that human bodies and fairy shrimp both are excellent designs. Gnats (a favorite). Dust mites. Mosquitos. These are some very cool mechanisms and despite their limitations, exceed similar human design capabilities. What does that say about the method of design (notice I did not say [dD]esigner!)?
