What makes sense is that everyone should pay a fair share, that there should be no free loaders, with the possible exception of the poor, out of compassion for their situation. Given that the standard methods of taxation take a percentage of income, property, capital appreciation, or consumption, the affluent will always pay more than others. There is no current proposal that has everyone pay exactly the same amount. Thus, it hard to see the rationale for "progressive" tax rates, anyway. It is rather a case of piling it on.........
