SONOMA RESOURCE CORP. CERRO TORO PROJECT, SAN JUAN PROVINCE, ARGENTINA - UPDATE

VANCOUVER, May 23 /CNW/ - Sonoma Resource Corp.
Trading Symbol: SNA (VSE)

Exploration activities at the 100% Company-owned Cerro Toro Project,
located in San Juan Province, Argentina, have been completed for this
exploration season. With the onset of winter, Sonoma's exploration team is
demobilizing the camp facilities and removing equipment. The Company is
engaged in discussions regarding possible joint ventures prior to the new
exploration season, expected to begin in October 1997.
The onset of winter prevented initiation of a planned deep core hole
program, designed to investigate a 1600 meter long by 700 meter wide
geophysical anomaly mapped near the intersection of the Taguas and San Crispen
faults.
Of the planned 40 hole program, 18 drill holes have been completed to
date, due in part to logistical and mechanical difficulties. Of the assay
results from holes one to sixteen, fourteen of the holes encountered
mineralization. Holes RC-1, RC-8 and RC-9 encountered water and assay values
may have been diluted. Significant silver/zinc/copper/gold values from the
core and reverse circulation holes are as follows:

A preliminary interpretation of the available results indicated the Cerro
Toro Project has the potential to host a porphyry system. While
interpretation suggests that none of the drilling to date has intersected the
porphyry source, it has outlined a belt containing widespread mineralization.
Results of three I.P. geophysical surveys appear to be influenced by an
abundance of pyrite, increasing at depth in drill holes, that occurs below the
zinc/silver/lead values.
Sonoma Resource Corp. currently has in excess of $4 million in available
capital, and an extensive inventory of exploration stage projects in
Argentina. During the next four months, the Company plans to continue field
sampling and mapping work at its 100% owned 50,000 hectare Apeleg claim in
Chubut province. Early reconnaissance work has been successful in identifying
several NE striking structures that contain gold and copper mineralization.
Planned work will include systematic sampling and mapping of the structural
stockwork zones, some measuring over 3.5 km in length.

Sonoma Resource Corp.
