Saw this post by Avis on Fool in reference to Red Herring article.
Apparently per (pre-ipo) Athersys thread on S.I. they got quite a secondary financing group set-up. Can anyone lend any expertise here as to what the threat (or perhaps promise) of this technology actually is? I don't have the actual Red Herring article as of yet.

"The October, 2000 issue of Red Herring has an article PROTEIN POWERHOUSE) about a privately held biotech company called Athersys. According to the article, they have developed and patented an easy, rapid way of inducing genes to produce proteins. The process is called RAGE for random-activation gene expression and according to the authors could replace recombinant DNA as the primary application for creating drugs. The author refers to the business models of Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Incyte Gernomics Human Genome sciences and Celera and states that these companies could be obsolete if Rage catches on.

The author also states that Athersys has reproduced the human genomes billions of times and has discovered 10,000 genes overlooked by Celera, the HUMAN Genome Project, and researchers around the world.

I have reservations about the validity of the article. Does anyone on this board know anything about this company?"
