Stratos Lightwave Announces Major Design
Wins For Its Line of High-Density LC Optical
Transceivers

CHICAGO, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Stratos Lightwave, Inc. (Nasdaq: STLW - news), a leading
manufacturer of high-performance optical subsystems and components, announced today that it
has 80 new design wins for its high-density optical transceivers based on the LC fiber optic
interface. Cisco, Alcatel, Nortel, and Lucent are some of the major companies that have
selected Stratos LC transceivers for systems in the Local Area Network, Storage Area
Network, and rapidly growing Metropolitan and Telecom markets.

``Since the introduction of our first LC interface-based product in 1999, Stratos has seen
overwhelmingly strong acceptance of smaller transceiver form factors in new product designs.''
Said Jim McGinley, President and CEO of Stratos. ``In addition to our 80 design wins to date,
Stratos has numerous prospective design-ins undergoing evaluation, and the feedback we are
getting indicates that the trend to high-density will continue. The industry is clearly moving to
higher-density interfaces in combination with higher channel data rates to address the pressing
need for more system bandwidth. Stratos has recently brought to market five different form factor
product families based upon the LC interface and has experienced widespread design wins in
each format.''

Stratos has one of the broadest lines of optical transceivers in the industry, covering a wide
spectrum of data rates and protocols. Stratos offers LC optical transceivers in compact
RJ-Format (single and multi-port versions), board-mounted Small Form Factor (SFF), removable
Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP), and external HSSDC to LC Media Interface Adapter (MIA)
formats. Stratos offers 100 Mbps to 2.5Gbps optical transceivers for Fast Ethernet, OC-3,
OC-12, OC-48, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, ATM and SONET applications.

``The strong acceptance of our LC based transceivers across a wide selection of form factors,
data rates and industry applications validates our early decision to develop more miniaturized
products for higher density applications, and in particular supports our commitment to the LC
interface.'' Said McGinley. ``The LC has emerged as the clear technical and market share leader
in small form factor fiber optic interfaces. Our growing number of design wins in the telecom and
metropolitan markets indicates that the strong distance characteristics of the LC interface has
helped accelerate the acceptance of LC based products in that space.'' Stratos Lightwave is
one of the founding members of the LC Alliance; an industry group dedicated to the development
of the LC fiber optic interface.

In other matters, in its last conference call on September 6, Stratos indicated that it believes that
sales would increase 20% sequentially for the 2nd quarter ending October 31, 2000, and 90 to
100% for all of fiscal 2001, and that net income would be in the range of 10 to 12% for the full
fiscal year. The company remains comfortable with this information and expects to release its full
second quarter results on November 29, 2000, after the markets close.
