I think he was referring to real wealth not the illusionary kind. If the wealth is an illusion than it is not wealth that is destroyed but the illusion. In a lot of the high flying tech stocks the money was put into a very small percentage of the available shares, most of the shares remained with people who paid little or nothing for them....the wealth was a paper illusion.
