Governor George W. Bush increased his lead over Vice President Al Gore to nine points in Ohio according to the most recent Portrait of America (POA) telephone survey of likely voters. Bush has 48%, Gore 39%. In the race for the United States Senate, incumbent Mike Dewine holds a 26-point lead on challenger Ted Celeste.

In the previous POA survey of Ohio, Bush led 45% to 39%. Ohio has 21 electoral votes.

49% of Ohio’s likely voters have a favorable opinion of Bush. Gore is seen favorably by 44%. Bush appears to be closer to the ideology of Ohio’s voters. 65% of voters classify themselves as somewhat conservative or moderate. 36% say Gore is in this category compared to 66% for Bush.
