Earnings of the big six are next week starting with BNS and BMO on Tuesday, May 27. The mean estimates (as compared to last year) for the fiscal second-quarter net income are:

RY $1.20 ($0.97)

CM $0.81 ($0.76)

BMO $1.12 ($0.98)

BNS $1.17 ($1.01)

TD $0.80 ($0.69)

NA $0.43 ($0.38)

Profits will be 16% higher than last year's second quarter, but 5% lower than the first quarter 1997, says Mark Maxwell, an analyst at CIBC Wood Gundy.

Beach, what do you know that Mr. Maxwell of the CIBC doesn't know? Is he wrong?
