Are there any statistics on margin, ie market neutral, net long, net short?

I think that "margin debt" is defined to be money borrowed from brokers to buy stock (I don't know if banks report loans backed by stock as "margin debt" or not).

So as far as I know, even though shortselling requires a "margin account", it is not included in margin debt (in fact if one were to be particular about it, it ought to be defined as "margin credit").
