Siemens Places $6.2 Million ComStruct Order for 3G Wireless -- Largest Ever for Blue Wave Systems
Option for a further $2.5 million for UMTS system
CARROLLTON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2000--Blue Wave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:BWSI - news), today announced a major order for its ComStruct(TM) communications processing building blocks worth $6.2 million from Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens ICM).

The order is Blue Wave's largest and provides Siemens ICM with an option to increase the order by a further $2.5 million.

Siemens ICM will use the ComStruct CompactPCI® CPCI/C6402 and VMEbus VME/C6420 communications platforms to provide the core processing power in its TDD (Time Division Duplex) trial system for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). Siemens is currently running research projects on UMTS in Japan, Europe and China and these base stations will allow its customers early access to third generation wireless infrastructure technology.

Blue Wave Systems plans to ship orders to the value of approximately $850,000 this fiscal quarter, a further $2 million during fiscal Q3 and $3.35 million in the final quarter of this financial year.

``Blue Wave's ComStruct has helped to significantly reduce the time required to bring our UMTS base station to this phase of development,'' said Horst Fenske, Vice President Development at Siemens Munich. ``By leveraging best-in-class technology based on industry standards, we can provide our customers with early access to the next generation of mobile telephony infrastructure solutions.''

``This endorsement for ComStruct comes at a very exciting time for Blue Wave Systems,'' said Kevin Parslow, executive vice president for Blue Wave Systems. ``This announcement with Siemens is an indication of the significant inroads that we are making in the telecommunications industry. We will continue to build on this momentum as more design wins move into production.''

Blue Wave Systems' ComStruct is a set of modular and scalable communications processing building blocks that includes hardware, software and DSP resources. ComStruct enables telecom infrastructure equipment manufacturers to develop, test and deploy carrier-class wireless and wireline technology for applications ranging from 3G wireless to Voice over IP.

Part of the ComStruct product line, the CPCI/C6402 is a very high density TMS320C6202-based digital signal processing (DSP) resource board for general voice and data stream processing applications that require leading edge processing capability. It features eight C6202 DSPs, network interfaces and two dedicated real-time system controllers in a single CompactPCI slot.

The ComStruct VME/C6420 is a high-bandwidth signal processing solution that complements Blue Wave Systems' range of communications platforms based around Texas Instruments C6000 device. Featuring four C6000 DSPs -- each with exclusive access to 16Mb SDRAM -- and an on-board control processor, it is particularly suitable for high performance applications such as 3G wireless.
