Informix Software Strengthens Position As Leading Database-Management Systems Provider

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2000--

New Company Structure and Key Management Appointments
to Focus on Database-Market Excellence

Informix(R) Software, the database company, a subsidiary of Informix(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:IFMX), today announced the company's focus, structure and key appointments.

Building on 20 years of database-management system (DBMS) product and technology excellence, Informix Software will focus on delivering industry-leading, cost-effective database-management systems to meet the needs of today's business users in the Internet era.

To this end, Informix Software has realigned its management for optimal focus on the development and delivery of leading-edge DBMS products for current and future customers. The new focus will be achieved by leveraging Informix technologies that provide a superior combination of performance, scalability, availability and extensibility. The Informix Software database products provide the functionality for online transaction processing, business intelligence and e-Business applications that deliver performance leadership with reduced total cost of ownership.

"We are revitalized by our new organization and commitment," said Jim Foy, president of Informix Software. "This focus has enabled us to develop a long-overdue strategic direction that will drive the development and delivery of database technology that will meet the needs of our customers and the marketplace worldwide."

To reinforce the strengths of its products, both now and in the future, Informix will deliver road maps for all its enterprise database servers -- Foundation.2000(TM), Informix Dynamic Server(TM) (IDS), Red Brick(R) and Extended Parallel Server(TM)(XPS) -- and associated products. The road maps will be delivered at the Informix Software User Conference and Partner Forum, Oct. 24 through Oct.28 in Orlando, Fla.

To demonstrate the company's aggressively forward-looking outlook, Informix is also announcing its program code named "Arrowhead(TM)" to develop an all-embracing database-management system. A rowhead will co-opt the best features of Informix Software products and technologies to comprehensively manage complex sets of data across multiple transactional and decision-support environments. (See separate release "Infnrmix Software Announces Vision for Single Data-Management latform for Business Applications.")

With its Cloudscape(TM) 100 percent Java database, and the UniVerse(R)/UniData(R) databases and associated products, Informix has a proven and extensive presence in the mobile and embedded database markets. These products will be handled in two separate and highly focused business groups within Informix Software, to ensure that their specific markets are given undiluted attention.

Informix Software now has the focus, structure and strategy to be a major influence in the developing DBMS marketplace while at the same time providing current customers with high-quality support and product enhancements. In addition, new products to meet e-Business needs, based on the Arrowhead program, will be delivered beginning in the first quarter of 2001 to present an exciting future option for current and future customers.

The Database Management Systems Market

According to research conducted by International Data Corp. (IDC), the market for relational, object-oriented database management systems is projected to reach $25.7 billion by 2004. As more companies incorporate e-Business solutions, database management systems will become a cornerstone for the deployment of the e-Business infrastructure. Deployment of databases will increase dramatically through 2002 and will experience sustained growth through 2004.

"Informix Software has tremendous technology and products to deliver a true e-Business DBMS platform for its customers," said Carl Olofson, senior analyst at IDC. "Today's announcement allows Informix to re-focus and deliver on its key strengths of scalable database technologies."
