<< Doug, P4 is at zero right now. They will probably be at 1.5GHZ at the end of the month. Overclockers have last generation Athlons running faster than that (though just barely). Intel couldn't keep a factory supported chip running at 2GHZ for more than a few seconds at MDF. Do you really think that AMD couldn't have run a factory supported 2GHZ Mustang prototype for a few seconds at MDF if it wanted to? >>

I don't know if they could or not, because they didn't. I don't think that it's very important though.

<< Scalability of both chips remains a big question mark, but Mustang may end up scaling better than P4 >>

Would you bet on that, or do you just think it's an outside chance?

<< Remember how devastating the high volume 1.13 coppermine was going to be and how much fanfare was heard at its release? The new stepping was going to unleash a flood of GHZ+ coppermines. Intel's propaganda always seems to get way ahead of itself when it is racing desperately to catch up with AMD. That situation hasn't changed yet. >>

The same reason I never worried about the coppermine is why I am worried about the p4. I don't think anyone in the know, really believed the coppermines would hit heavy volume at 1 ghz+ speeds. It was obvious that it's head room was gone, you were dealing with a known quantity. The p4 does not fall into that category, you don't know how much headroom it has, you don't know how good or bad it will perform on software yet.

By December, AMD will most likely have lost the MHZ crown, and will have to try and convince people that performance is made up of more then mhz while fighting the intel propaganda machine.
