Charles, thanks, I think Amdahl could cross-license in today's environment but your point is what happened with IBM in the sense that IBM stopped publishing their various interface details. Being a clone is difficult since your architecture must mimic the other company's architecture such that the operating system is compatible since Amdahl used the IBM operating systems. The new 64 bit architecture is more than just a new CMOS engine so the development job became too much with too little return. Having options between Amdahl, Hitachi and IBM did keep certain customers on the platform for even new application development. It will boil down to pricing. You can't reverse the attrition issue overnight, you can only slow it down.
