I don't think I've ever watched The Practice, but my views are based on experience in the trenches, so to speak. Here in New York, the expression, "New York lawyer" has special significance because it connotes a type of person who indulges in all manner of procedural tactics in an effort to gain a victory on a technical fault rather than on the substance of a case. The New York courts tend to encourage this kind of behavior, given the fact that the laws and regulations governing civil actions amount to some 8,000 or so rules, each of which has considerable case law to back it up. New York also condones lawyers who rely on procedural tactics, if for no other reason than the judge doesn't have to worry about the guts of the case and can rule instead on a technical imperfection.

As noted earlier, Shakespeare was and is right.
