This will be a long post (it will not fit on 1 page). The
SEMI data for the 69 month period, starting Jan 95 and
ending Sep 00, is presented in tabular form in addition to
3 columns that I have added. The data can be presented in
tabular and/or graph form - both techniques have their
advantages and disadvantages.

As presented in the previous post, the data has 3 positive
cycles where backlog was increasing and 2 negative cycles
where backlog was decreasing.

The first 4 columns is a listing of the data presented by
SEMI. Column 5 is the difference between the bookings and
the shipments for the month.

Column 6 is a "running total" of the backlog assuming that
the backlog was zero at that period of time. This is
obviously not a realistic assessment so column 7 was created
to put a little more realism into the calculation. I made
an arbitrary assumption that the remaining backlog in Jan 95
was 6 months using the Jan 95 shipment of 677K as the base.
Therefore, 6 times 677K equates to 4,062K as the starting
backlog. I think the number used is relatively unimportant,
but it prevents a negative backlog from occuring without it.

Many conclusions can be put forth by studying the data - I
will make a few.

1. The backlog has been increasing for the last 21 months,
by far the longest period within the data source.

2. The BtB ratio must come down to a more realistic level
in the future. As pointed out in a previous post, during
the past 21 months, the backlog has grown by 8B.

3. Compare the BtB of previous Septembers

Sep 95 1.02
Sep 96 0.70
Sep 97 1.06
Sep 98 0.57
Sep 99 1.07
Sep 00 1.16
(The market obviously was not happy with the 1.16 - the
group of 33 stocks was down 5.5 percent today.)

4. The performance of the sector remains extremely robust -
where is the slowdown??<gg> Where is JJ of SSB when we
really need him to slow this sector down??<gg>
