Well, in that case the perpetrators could have been excommunicated, if they were Catholic. You can't excommunicate someone who isn't Catholic. It may be that they were automatically excommunicated, I would have to research when that happens.

Or it may be that the Church looked the other way. I don't know if you are aware of it but Pope John Paul II recently apologized to Jews for the Church not doing more to help during the Holocaust.
