Why do you think companies care about market share? Because once they establish market share their very presence becomes advertising of sorts, reinforcing that position. My example is just one of several companies that could see a "natural" connection to kids. Why wouldn't McD create a 51% stake in some rebranded education company? I'm sure they'd make it SOUND great.

You give people too much credit. Once there is no effective alternative (because of aggressive marketing), the market leader doesn't have to differentiate its product anymore. Why do no-name brands of cola never change the Coke and Pepsi market? Because most people make cola decisions on factors not related to the taste but rather market factors. People that don't see that deregulation has ANY downsides are either uninformed or willfully ignoring those negatives.

We have the premiere economy and people still come here to our universities. Many of the best universities in the country are public. Many are private. But the private one's discriminate based upon wealth. That's legal and maybe in their interest. If one wants to stratify your country into educational haves and havenots then we should go right ahead with vouchers at the lower grade levels as well. Heck, I'm a have and my kids are probably haves. So if I didn't give a darn about anyone else, I'd say let the public schools sink.
