Hello Frederick,

> How wrong I was to even think you'd have the balls to
> mention my name to Stewart. I must have been dreaming.

How right I was that you would be incapable of accomplishing a simple task. ;-)

> I used to have a different impression of you Scott.

Mine is simply a more refined impression of you. I understand the intent, but also recognize the ineffectiveness of the methodologies.

> Somehow your spirit has faded into black. The spark, the

Nope ... the spirit and spark are there full strength ... but the difference between us now is that I am in the game and doing something productive ... not just sitting around pointing blame and crying because someone took my ball. Grow up and do something for a change ...

> As the Chief Operating Officer of Novell, THE best reason

> he/she is a shareholder.

And I have to say that I respect someone who takes a stand for respect and adult behavior. I have not seen either of these from you towards Stewart ... so I have no problem identifying who might need to come down off their high-horse and stop acting like a child. But that's just my opinion ...

> Now perhaps I didn't leave this piece of information with
> Stewart's assistant.

Well ... we'll all be here waiting to hear the results of your next call. I'm sure that you are now much more practiced and better understand how to effectively deal with people ...

> But this is really becoming all very beside the point.

No ... I thought the point was that you were going to call Stewart and work things out. And I challenged you to do so. Are you saying that you give up? That you just aren't capable of pulling it off?

> I called Stewart Nelson 3-4 times and left a message each

Then maybe the "best [you] could" just wasn't good enough? Maybe your approach to this whole situation might not be the most effective way to make progress? Wow ... I believe that you made some interesting comments to me about my apologies to Eric, Stewart, and many of the employees of Novell when I recognized that my behavior had been out of line. It sure seemed to allow me to make huge progress in what I am working on ... are you just too big to do the same? You still want to argue that your disrespectful behavior is productive and effective? Feel free to ...

I'm still waiting to hear the results of your successful call ...

> He obviously either 1) doesn't know me and therefore

Yep ... I would guess that #1 is out ... #2 or #3 might both be on target, but I'm just guessing.

How *DO* you talk to someone who has been publicly attacking you? How *DO* you return a call to someone that has demonstrated that they have absolutely no way to show you any respect, and is such a coward that he would do so behind your back and not to your face?

> Bottom line, Stewart doesn't strike me as a guy who's very
> comfortable with himself or other people.

Fred, just remember that when you point your finger at someone else, there are three fingers pointing back at you. Basic psychology demonstrates that we see in others a reflection of ourselves ... are you very comfortable with yourself and others?

I would say that I can understand Stewart not being comfortable with people who are behaving like you ... I know that *I'm* not!

> And I can't think of a worse combination to be stuck with
> while being asked to lead a company.

Hmmm ... so what company are *you* leading right now?

> What's the big deal with picking up the phone and talking
> with Frederick Smart?

Nothing ... except that I haven't seen a level-headed Fredrick Smart since more than a year ago in Provo. I think that was one of the last times that Fred seemed to really be on to something good ... and could talk about things in a straight and normal way.

> If he can't return a phone call then what good is he? What
> kind of example does this set for Novell as a company???

Fred, one employee in San Jose told me tonight that he was glad that Stewart wasn't wasting his time calling someone like you ... and I have to agree. I think he's pretty good at knowing what his time is worth, and seeing the example of what you would offer him in a phone conversation.

Maybe you ought to try e-mail first ... you could outline a productive brief of what you'd like to discuss ...

> I'll tell you the kind of example. It's the SAME piss poor
> selfish - "what's mine is mine and what's yours is mine" -
> example he set when he grabbed those hundreds of thousands
> shares at $.10 cent/share from Novell's treasury.

My, my ... short memory. You mean when the board *gave* him those options?

You make these stupid statements, and then complain that a guy won't return your call ... and you still don't understand why?

> And yes Scott, it's just all "sour grapes." Ethics,
> morality and simply "what's right" never entered into my
> thinking when I thought of Stewart's actions.

I'm so glad that you *are* the all knowing keeper of what "right" in this world ...

> NOT!!

You're right there ... NOT!!

> I'd guess that Stewart has let down more folks inside
> Novell than you can shake a stick at. I believe he's been
> a disaster for Novell. Just my opinion.

Got it. And you are right ... it's an opinion.

> And if I were Stewart and he knew I felt this way, I'd be
> on the phone as quick as I could reaching out, building
> trust, energy and developing something to establish some
> kind of bridge/tie.

Are you kidding? Listening to a guy spewing the kind of crap that you have been spewing lately? I'm glad that he understands how to best use his time, and to allow the guy on the other end to cool out and get a grip ...

> The phrase "love your enemies" is very powerful. For I can
> learn more about myself from loving Stewart Nelson that I
> can from loving others who love me.

You sure have a wild way of showing love ...

> But then that's just wacky/crazy Frederick Smart. Just the
> way I am, period. But I'm also not one to wink, roll and
> lie down either.

No ... it's just you talking, and then not walking the walk. It all sounds good, until you go to put it in action.

> Hope all is well Scott.

Things are going great. I'm having a blast, exploring new occurances, and enjoying all that life has to offer. This means a combination of good days and bad days, road blocks and great success. Life.

> Integrity. It's all that matters.

Hmmm ... Integrity and Authenticity are two very powerful ways to be. I would wonder, however, what your definition of Integrity is ...

> I made the effort. Stewart made ZERO effort. But the
> challenge isn't over. I'm just not going to play games.

I thought that's what you *were* doing ... I haven't seen a serious, professional business approach yet. But maybe I just don't know one when I see one ...

> After all, he's an adult. He's a COO for God's sake. And
> this IS a public company. And, BTW - last I checked - I AM
> a Novell shareholder.

Awesome! I look forward to holding you responsible for the outcome that you are working to create! We all can look forward to it ... sounds like the future is being determined by Fred!
