Jeff BOyd said: I was speaking to a Canadian at work several weeks ago who told me that Canadians burned down the White House in the War of 1812. Here in the US, the British get the credit. When I checked into it, I was surprised at the large part Canada played in the war, but I sure couldn't find where Canadians played a role in burning down the White House. What were you taught in school? "

Jeff:

a) We had no choice but to play a role in the War of 1812.. you Yanks invaded Upper and Lower Canada :) (now known as the provinces of Ontario and Quebec). As I recall, you guys were mad at the British stopping your ships off the coast and forcibly enlisting them into British warship duty (called impressment I believe)and that gave a reason to several southern war hawk congressmen types to try and pursue their dream of "MANIFEST DESTINY" and having the stars and stripes fly all over North America. In fact.. that invasion would be the start of the Cdn identity, and would be the first event that would eventually lead to Canada being formed in 1867. There are many monuments in Southern Ontario where battles took place.

As for the burning of Washington.. we were certainly taught that.. in fact.. I believe we were taught the presidential mansion had no name til it got burnt.. when it was repainted.. it got painted white.. hence the term "White House".. However.. I cant really say whether it was just regular British troops who did the burning, or whether Canadian militia were also involved (it wouldnt surprise me tho.. but I'd have to do some research) I can tell you tho that the reason Washington was burnt down was in retaliation for the Americans burning down York (now Toronto), the Lower Canada capital in 1813.. most Americans I bet didnt even know that event occurred.
