Malcolm, usually the company thats being purchased price goes up while the one making the offer goes down. First, purchaser is paying a premium above the market in order to buy. Second the purchaser to the extent he is paying the premium is diluting his balance sheet.

This is typical Wall Street accounting focused on the short term and ignoring the long term strategic benefits. The only other problem that GTE may encounter here is touching off a biding war for BBN. The next couple of weeks will tell.

If they can pull it off, this will be a completly differant company. It will no longer be a utility but a for real growth company paying a 4.5% dividend. Worse things could happen to you.
