sarmad, you are not accounting for opportunity cost here. every dollar given to saddam in food and medical supplies is a dollar he doesn't need to spend and can divert to weapons of mass destruction.

if the us gives iraq a billion in food and medical supplies and this allows saddam to divert $200 million into weapons of mass destruction that end up killing millions... that would be a tough pill to swallow, imho. there is a saying that holds true here. "there is a simple solution to every complex problem... and it is almost always wrong."

btw, if billions of food and medical supplies entered iraq, what makes you think it would get outside the palace doors or beyond the military elite?

the issue isn't quite as simple as "just feed and provide medical care for the people of iraq." there are serious issues involved with deadly ramifications.

i guess it boils down to whether an evil leader has the right to kill off his population if he so desires and what other countries should do when a devil in a leadership position acts in this manner. should we provide all such leaders with food and medical supplies so they can spend more on bombs that they are itching to use against you?

rightly or wrongly, i think the policy decision has been made to let saddam kill off his population rather than allow him to develop high powered bombs to attack and kill israel citizens and, to a lesser extent, american other citizens through terrorism. the only other option is to conquer saddam militarily, which would be quite easy. however, there are ramifications beyond the battle field.

saddam is in control, here. the responsibility is his. he has created hell on earth for the people of iraq.
