To ease the pain of today's outright butchery, I've put together a Letterman-style List of Ten:

10. Funds close their books on Oct. 31 --- three trading days away. Most finalize adjustments long before then.

9. Cash is at record highs and will have to be put to work at some point.

8. Carrier spending is going up, as per MSDW report, and upgraded estimates out of RHK and Dell'Oro as referenced by Roth in yesterday's CC.

7. Fiber optics' component constraints are easing and the bottleneck at the pt. of installation seems to be easing. As per Roth, the worst is over.

6. NT's growth in Europe was 70% and indications are for improved growth in Asia and Latin America. In other words, what began in North America is spreading. (I have this on good authority from Siemens as well.)

5. Every vendor to report so far has said carriers have to upgrade or die. It's not a luxury. It's survival.

4. Corning blew out numbers and guided for continued strength in the sector.

3. SDLI blew out numbers and the CEO said he sees no slowdown whatsoever --- and guided analysts to 100% revenue growth next year.

2. Wall Street likes formulas and they wanted to wring the excess out of optical before calling a bottom. I think today qualifies.

1. If GLW and SDLI blew out numbers in spite of NT's installation glitches and LU's across-the-board fiasco, what's to prevent JDSU from doing the same?

Anyone else want to make their own list, please do. It's better than jumping out a window.
