Agilent Technologies Ships Over One Million of Industry's Most Widely-used Fibre Channel Controller ICs

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2000--

Tachyon Fibre Channel Controller ICs Represent 64 Percent of Market Share in 2000

Agilent Technologies (NYSE:A), a leading provider of innovative technologies for communications and life sciences, today announced that it has shipped over one million Tachyon Fibre Channel controller ICs since production began in 1995. Agilent's Tachyon protocol controller ICs are used by industry-leading storage subsystem and system OEMs.

Gartner Group projects Fibre Channel controller shipments of 981,000 units in 2000, with Agilent expecting to ship 625,000 Tachyon ICs, representing a 64 percent market share.

"The Fibre Channel controller ICs market is on a steep ramp with strong continued shipments expected for quite some time," said Benjamin Thompson of Gartner DataQuest. "We expect shipments to grow to over fYve million units in 2004, a 55 percent compounded annual growth rate."

"We're pleased to have been a Tachyon IC customer since the beginning," says Steve Sicola, technical director of Compaq StorageWorks Arrays. "Agilent's entire line of Fibre Channel controllers has been a key enabler to Compaq and our performance-leading storage products. Our tight working relationship with the Tachyon IC team has been an essential element to both companies' success."

Agilent's newest Tachyon device, the 2-Gb/s Tachyon XL2 IC, is now available to developers of storage subsystems, storage routers, host bus adapters and host computer motherboards. These controller ICs are being designed into SAN applications, such as Internet access, digitized video, online transactional processing and other enterprise storage applications.

"Over 20 industry-leading OEMs have incorporated the XL2 controllers in their next-generation designs, and these new 2-Gb/s Fibre Channel products are coming to market soon," said Bob Whitson, worldwide marketing manager for Agilent's Storage Networking Division.

The Tachyon XL2 IC's proven state machine architecture scales proportionately with system CPU resources to avoid performance bottlenecks associated with on-chip processors. This architecture allows simultaneous, parallel processing of inbound data, outbound data, and hardware control and commands to maximize bandwidth and minimize latency and I/O overhead. Agilent is also building host adapter boards based on the Tachyon architecture.

Agilent is also partnering with Adaptec to tailor Fibre Channel solutions for worldwide PC server OEMs and resellers. Adaptec builds Tachyon-based host adapters, and provides drivers and SAN management software backed by a strong sales, distribution, service and support infrastructure to help customers implement Fibre Channel in demanding, PC-server computing environments.
