WSJE: Weak PC Demand In France, Germany
By DAVID PRINGLE
Staff Reporter
LONDON -- Weak demand in France and Germany held back the European personal-computer market in the third quarter, early figures from market analysts showed.
Unit sales in the western European market between July and September were 11.7% up on the same period in 1999, according to a report from the London office of the U.S.-based research firm International Data Corp. Although that is an improvement on the 9.6% growth in the second quarter, it is well short of the 20% plus growth rates achieved in 1999 and 1998.
The figures back up recent reports by Dell Computer Corp., chip-maker Intel Corp. and software giant Microsoft Corp. of weaker-than-expected demand for PCs in Europe during the third quarter. Those reports have been partially responsible for recent selloffs of some U.S. tech stocks.
Computer suppliers had been hoping that large businesses would begin to splash out on PCs again after cutting back in the wake of the Year 2000 computer worries.
"The crucial corporate investments are slowly starting to improve," said senior IDC researcher Andy Brown, "but France and Germany were really quite slow."
IDC doesn't expect a significant rebound in demand from businesses before the first half of 2001. Still, there was some good news for computer suppliers. IDC said that sales of mobile computers grew 44% in western Europe in the quarter compared with a year earlier.
