Based on the reactions of my husband and my father, psychologically what matters to them is what the Dow does - and my husband also cares about the S&P 500 because that's what his retirement account is invested in. I think every other stock in the world could go to hell and they wouldn't feel a bit of nervousness. I know, I've told my husband, "the Nasdaq was down 8% today," and he says, "What about the S&P 500?" and I say, "it hardly moved," and he shrugs off the Naz action as irrelevant.
