There is surely less irony in the turning away by government officials of fleeing Jews, as they are not, as you say, claiming to be God's vicars on earth and greatly moral. But I castigate them all the same. It is shameful. As an American, I feel sad and ashamed whenever I think of it, which is surprisingly frequently.
