Your point about the relative safety of SUVs being a function of who the driver is, is probably accurate, although speculative. My concern is that some people, including (improbably) Maverick, get their information from scandal shows masquerading as news shows like Dateline. I did not see the program that Maverick was using for his information source, but the point that Mav made is valid only if one believes that a rollover death is qualitatively worse than a death from a different type of collision. The IIHS site restates what every high school physics student knows: other things being equal, people are better off in the more massive vehicle. Your point is that other things are not always equal. That is true.

2 wheel drive SUVs are often lower riding than the 4 wheel equivalent. This may make them safer, but again this is speculative, as their lighter weight and more responsive suspensions may encourage "sportier" and therefore less safe driving.
