More Than 71 Million Global Subscribers Choose CDMA for Access to Mobile Communications; Latin America Continues to Shine, North America Exceeds Expectations, Asia Pacific Remains a Cornerstone

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ost. 26, 2000--The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) Thursday announced that worldwide CDMA subscribers for the period 3Q00 exceeded 71 million, representing a 73 percent increase over the previous year.

The announcement was made at the CDMA Americas Congress in San Diego.

The Latin American region experienced the largest percentage increase, growing more than 234 percent over 3Q99 to nearly 10.5 million subscribers. CDMA has maintained a dominant position in North America, with 27 million users (a 105 percent increase over the previous year).

The Asia Pacific region now totals more than 33.5 million subscribers. Subscribers in other regions of the world, including Europe, Middle East, and Africa reached nearly one million.

"CDMA continues to grow rapidly across the globe," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "We expect this trend to continue, particularly as the world moves to CDMA-based platforms for 3G."

The CDMA Development Group is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 110 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers.

The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne features and services, public relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne-related matters.
