They call it a "secular" bull or bear market if the basic trend is up or down. Typically the Dow theory is used for that determination, namely, if the DOW Ind. and the Dow Transp. are making new highs (I use 12 months highs), the trend is bullish (and vice versa). It is secular if that phenomenon continues for a number of years.

By the way, I just took two short term "bounce positions" in SCMR (triple at $64-7/8) and CREE ($81.5), maybe I can ride these for $2 to $3 before selling restart later on.
