The Betamax comparison may work but NTSC/PAL is a better one. We here in the U.S. got started first with color-TV and decided on NTSC -some of the Europeans picked a better one but later, PAL. But we didn't change to PAL just because it was better. 30+ years later we still have NTSC (Never The Same Color). GSM may not be the best but it will stay around....
