Your note brought a chuckle to my heart. If anyone thinks that barrick would spend money on buying back stock when they could use those funds to purchase new earth moving equipment or build mines for new production, is not thinking correctly. Barrick is not into building shareholder value, there emphasis is on additional production, hedging, and anything else that increases supply to the market. Unfortunately, that kind of management perspective leads to a lower pog and the resulting lower share price, certainly not increased value for the owners of the company.
