Dead candidate leading GOP Sen. Ashcroft in Missouri

Democrats and Republicans agree: In the wake of Gov. Mel Carnahan's death last week, the candidate has shot ahead in some polls and now leads Republican John Ashcroft in the race for the U.S. Senate.

Members of both parties also acknowledge that much of that jump can be attributed to the widespread sympathy sweeping the state for Gov. Carnahan and his family.

Will those emotions remain strong enough to translate to a Democratic victory on Election Day? Or will the advantage of Ashcroft's incumbency and the momentum of months of energetic campaigning translate into another six years in the U.S. Senate?

Most political analysts said Wednesday that Ashcroft remains in a strong position two weeks from the election.

Gov. Roger Wilson announced Tuesday that he would appoint Carnahan's widow, Jean, to the seat if Carnahan garners more votes than Ashcroft on Nov. 7.

Carnahan died in an Oct. 16 airplane crash, too close to the election to replace his name on the ballot.
