>If 50% is to much how much is enough, what would make you HAPPY ? ............ Ballpark - 30%. I figure that government 'services' are worth 20% of my income, while welfare is worth another 10. By the way, I give more than 5% of my income to charities - charities of my choice, not the choice of some bureaucrat. I almost always have given about 5%, even when I only made $6000/y (20 years ago). I'd be happy if the Provinces took enough to provide a social security net, public education, subsidized medical care, and to take care of their other constitutional duties.
I'd be happy if the Feds took enough for their constitutional obligations and regional equalization payments. Federal responsibilities do NOT include health care or education. Regional equalization payments should be clear and targeted as such. UI and CPP should be scrapped, and all human resources development should be done by the provinces.
>In which other country would you feel better living in ? I don't know. Some things are more important to some people than others. I value nature, civil society and personal freedom highly. There are a number of candidate countries, including Costa Rica, New Zealand, Australia, the U.S., and Canada. Of course, civil society requires clearly articulated principles, such as those laid out in our incomplete bill of rights. One of these must be honesty in government - including cost/benefit analyses of all government programs.
How's that for a start. -g |
