Jim, <How much more power are we talking about here? Why is the power such a big issue in a desktop?>

I have no idea. Physical design is not my area. All I know is that not all the devices in the RDRAM channel can be active at once due to power considerations.

This is just wild speculation, but if Rambus initially designed RDRAM with fewer banks (for die size concerns) and paid more attention to power consumption, Intel wouldn't have run into as many of the problems that they did. I was hoping that the RDRAM-4i design, combined with 256 Mbit technology, could have solved both problems, but it seems that might be a little too late.

<I personally bought the 840 based workstation in February because I wanted the dual channel RDRAM. I had no problems with the machine or its performance.>

Well yeah, guys like you and I who made a fortune on RMBS stock can afford 840-based workstations. Most people can't. But if you're willing to pay a few extra hundred for it, the system you are getting is top-of-the-line in terms of performance and stability.

However, most people these days won't spend a penny above $1,500 on a PC anymore. And I don't think the 840 platform (nor the 850 platform for that matter) is a good fit for those market segments at $1,500 and below.
