I think the scenario u depict, is different to what happens in large hitech companies (whether IBM/HWP/MSFT/CSCO/etc) : "factory" is a term used to name the group that does "product engineering and development". "field" is a term that is used to name the group that takes "factory product" and sells the product and supports it to the end customer. Without the "field" team, "factories" can develop what they like, but they wont be able to sell/support it, coz factories dont have a sales & support channel - thats the fields job. cheers, kumar
