Reuters story I just posted says that Dems have a 5-percentage-point lead in House races, which could/should be enough to regain control of the House of Representatives. It is very important for this to happen. I'm liking what I've been reading the past two-three days. I think we're seeing the independents start to shift to the Democratic side, and it appears the union factor is starting to kick in in Michigan. I think also that some people who didn't like Gore's "personality" in the debates are starting to focus on the issues now, and they're embracing the Democratic platform.

You are correct about the Carnahan scenario. His name remains on the ballot. I was in Jefferson City, Mo., just two weeks ago (before the tragedy) and people there were telling me that Ashcroft was highly beatable. I have a college buddy who is a big-time GOP lawyer-politico in mid-Missouri, and he said he could not vote for Ashcroft, based on his performance in the Senate the past six years. Sometimes the sympathy vote is enough to pull off an upset in a situation such as this (think of Mrs. Sonny Bono).
