Acroname Inc., a tiny supplier of parts and kits for robotics enthusiasts, plans to announce the launch of a kit that turns handheld computers based on Palm Inc.'s operating system into roaming, wheeled robots.

A few weeks ago, a team of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute published instructions for turning the popular Palm and Visor personal digital assistants into robots that can detect obstacles and move in patterns. All it takes is some glue, tape, soldering and a few parts.
