"Socialism" is a word conservatives use when they can't think of any rational arguments. That word in itself is a scare tactic left over from the McCarthy era. This country will never be socialist, just a little more or a little less than it is now. Canada and every country in Europe is a lot more socialist than the US and they are doing fine. Their taxes are also a lot higher than ours. That's the trade-off. The rich pay more and everybody gets services for life.
Since the GOP is the party of the rich they hate this idea. Instead they want tax breaks and fewer services. Which means little or no safety net, which leads to rioting in the streets and a grand Canyon between rich and poor and a deterioration of the American middle class. Getting rid of unions is also a big GOP goal. And to get rid of any kind of decent health care or minimum wage. Though we have far less socialism and taxes and than any other developed nation the GOP think we have a "big spending" problem. Ironically when a Republican gets into the White House he drives the national debt up at an accelerated rate while at the same time cutting services even to the most needy like mental patients and the poor without health care. The old "let them eat cake" attitude which only brings us increased racial and class unrest and ultimately "off with the heads". The GOP has never liked SS or Medicare or helping public education or any social services. They say "get the government off our backs" but that's just for the corporations. They want the government in your bedroom, in your womb and letting anyone who wants do they they want to the environment. Reagan have the GOP their best shot. He had charisma and rallied patriots when we needed it but his fiscal policies created a quick boom followed by a long bust. Meanwhile the government coffers were looted, the S+L pirates were let loose and encouraged, the arms dealers had a hay-day, the minorities rioted and burned down the inner cities, pollution and clear-cutting increased dramatically and so-called "smaller government" produced greater and greater and greater debt.
