I am not sure why they are lowering estimates by $.22 for FY01. Even assuming no growth from Q4, you still arrive at $4.24. With DRAM purchases coming plus 300mm, I have a hard time believing we won't see excellent growth. I am at a loss to explain the total lack of courage by Institutional Investors to step in and buy these names at 5X '01 EPS. My guess is that we will see upgrades once visibility is improved(and the stock is 30 or 40 points higher).

Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSEA $23.50)
F2001 EPS: $4.07 from $4.29
Long-Term Attractive
Sue Billat, Semiconductor Equipment/Foundries
“Varian Semiconductor reported operating fourth quarter EPS of $1.06, exceeding our and the Street estimates of $0.95” said Billat. “At 5.7 times our calendar 2001 EPS number, Varian is trading at a steep discount to most other stocks in our group. However, we expect investor concerns over slow growth relative to other front-end companies to limit near term upside to the stock. Accordingly, we are downgrading VSEA to a Long-Term Attractive from a Strong Buy.”
