| To answer more seriously, to me the difference between a conservative and a libertarian is important, although we often work together. Conservatism does not mean to preserve the status quo, which, in any case, is futile. It means to preserve the core values of our civilization, including the moral consensus that has grown up around liberal democracy, a high regard for the arts and sciences, and a reverence for the historical and cultural milestones that are our particular heritage, and appreciating similar artifacts from other milieus. Compassion, then, is a key value, although balanced by other values. Besides, even a lot of libertarians believe in private charity...... |
